Casual and Athletic Shoes: Your Choices and Those of Professional Athletes

Walkers, runners, jump-rope stars, and sidewalk hop-scotch athletes must at some point pause their training, strap on some casual  shoes, and go for some ice-cream as they head to a movie. Sure, during training, careful nutrition and wearing the correct pair of shoes is mandatory, but outside the fields, trails, and tracks, a more precisely stylized cover for the human foot can also be found. The only rule of thumb to keep in mind might be the need to accept that one pair will not suffice to cover all occasions and outfits. Just as there are shoes for soccer and shoes for basketball, more than one casual shoe pair will be necessary.

Before he had Nike, Michael Jordan had his brothers Larry and Ronnie to help him pick out both his going-out shoes and his athletic  shoes. If you find you're short a few siblings, perhaps there'll be some comfort in knowing that you can always, at least, be like Beckham when and go for the "boots" of your favorite player ' let's say Zinedine Zidane? (Remaining like David Beckham, means you're likely to wear "velour pants studded with three stripes of false diamonds" the next time you meet the Queen.)

Maybe Michael Schumacher wears sharkskin shoes while running his cars, but if more traditional men's running  shoes and sneakers are what top your list, perhaps you'd consider, as a start, answering the age-old question, Pumas or Adidas? Asking the choice of the nearest five people produced the following results: one said Adidas; two said Pumas right away; and two reported feeling more or less the same about either, but chose Pumas after further thought.

For those thinking about women's  running shoes, the same question can be a starting point. There's no need to fear being thought of as frivolous or being derided as "mostly hype and hair," like Beckham was after the announcement came that he'd be joining the Los Angeles Galaxy. If a Swoosh is as appealing as Three Stripes or a Mountain Lion, consider collecting all three. Now, if only we all had Simon Fuller (of Spice Girls and American Idol production fame) to negotiate a $250 million, 5-year deal for us, then we could really be like Beck!
